Served as head of the surgical department at Evacuation Hospital No. 1500. Having gone through the combat path of a military surgeon as part of a unit that directly participated in battles against the German–Fascist invaders, Mikhail Grigoryevich recalled:
«The entire army was poorly clothed and shod, there was no food, and we were in desperate need of medicines and dressings. If you add to this the extremely harsh winter of 1941–1942, it becomes clearer under what conditions our soldiers had to fight. The wounded usually arrived at the first aid post with severe frostbite and often suffered more from that than from their wounds. Working in a front-line hospital was sometimes incredibly difficult. When the wounded were brought in, we had to stand at the operating table for up to eight hours without relief, and surgeries lasted 15–18 hours a day. I personally was the head of two surgical departments: the 2nd surgical department with 150 beds (I had one assistant physician) and the 4th surgical department with a convalescent ward for 250 beds (also with one assistant physician). I always started work at six in the morning. I had a very capable and intelligent nurse (feldsher) with beautiful handwriting who kept my medical records. After making my rounds with her and prescribing treatment, I went to the operating room at 10 or 11 a.m. and operated for six to eight hours (dictating to the operating nurse as I worked). After a short lunch break and rest, I went to the second department and operated there for several more hours. True, such heavy days were not constant — we had relative rest between battles when the wounded were not being brought in from the front-line hospitals and medical battalions. Then we treated our earlier patients and could work and rest more normally. In general, the enormous work I had to perform was possible only thanks to a strict daily schedule, efficient time management (the presence of good assistants), great endurance, and dedication to my beloved profession.»
